1. The IHRHL was established in August of 1988

2. The Mission of the IHRHL is working to popularize
and sustain Human Rights, Rule of law, Democracy
and good governance for purposeful citizenship
participation in community and national life. Its
primary objective is to effectively create a culture
of rights and responsibilities in the Niger Delta
region and Nigeria through its varied networks of
activities.

3. The IHRHL is governed by a board of trustees that
is headed by a Chair, in the
Person of Chief N. Okogbule
The National secretariat is headed by the Executive
Director in the person of Mr.
Anyakwee Nsirimovu.
A female programme Administrator administers the
office and supervises the staff on a daily basis.
A Programme Director implements and supervises all
projects activities in the organization.
All programme Officers are in charge of their units
and have the responsibilities of developing and
delivering jobs in their units within a time frame.

4. The IHRHL has about 9 different units, and each
is vested with different responsibilities. The
units and their functions are as follows:
• Information Unit: the unit is responsible for
gathering information and dissemination. The unit is
the link between the organization and the outside
world. The unit also spearheads the quarterly
production of the organizations magazine “The
Defender”
• Documentation unit: The Documentation unit is the
library of the institute. Its responsibilities
involve acquiring; processing, storing and
dissemination of information towards empowering the
masses to enable them identify and assert their
interest.
• Legislative Advocacy unit: the unit is involved
with creating public enlightenment programmes that
provide vital information on the basic human rights
of every individual in the society particularly in
the Niger Delta.
• Access to Justice Unit: The unit intervenes and
provides services to facilitate access to justice
for deprived/ underprivileged individuals where it
is difficult for citizens to have access to state
owned judicial establishments.
• Economic and Social Rights Unit: As second
generation rights that are not usually provided and
subjected to environment and social factors, this
unit is involved with the function of assisting the
citizens of the state in monitoring the sincerity of
those policies and programmes embarked upon by
government and its agencies aimed at alleviating the
plight of the citizens.
• Women and Child rights unit: this unit deals with
gender related issues specifically women and
children. It creates awareness on gender related
issues, government policies and its implications on
the lives of women and children.
• Conflict Transformation:
• Human Rights and Church Network unit: The unit
tries to promote human rights in the church. By
recognizing the church as an organization that
wields so much influence and capable of advocating
for change, the unit works with the church different
church units to promote human rights.

5. The strategies employed are geared towards
Education, Research, information gathering and
dissemination through:
• Workshops/ Seminars
• Conferences/ Symposia/ Lectures
• Community forums/ Town Hall meetings
• Training and Capacity building
• Free legal Aid scheme
• Production of informative materials, magazine,
books etc.

6. Most of the activities in the IHRHL are
community- based and are carried out in communities
of the Niger Delta region with far reaching
implication across Nigeria.

7. The IHRHL has an impressive human and material
capacity to work with. With over twelve staff at
its national secretariat and over 5000 paralegals
and volunteers spread across the region, and offices
in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria
and in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state , the IHRHL has
distinguished itself as a foremost human rights
organization in the Niger Delta and in Nigeria.
